Calculator Tools Got a Big Brain Upgrade
Quick update on one of my favorite projects. I just upgraded the app creation prompts on Calculator Tools and switched the AI over to more powerful models. It’s running on the latest Gemini versions from Google now, and honestly… the apps it makes are better than ever.
If you missed the original launch, I wrote about it back when it started in New AI Project… Calculator Tools!. The idea is still the same. You tell the AI what you want, it writes the HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and your app is instantly live with a link you can share with anyone. No code required.
Whoa! What Changed?
Two things, and they work together:
- Better prompts. I rewrote the instructions the AI gets behind the scenes every time you make an app, and I put much more definitive directives in the system prompt, so the AI gets clear, specific rules about what a good app has to do instead of loose suggestions. This is the stuff you never see, but it decides a lot about how your app turns out.
- Better models. Calculator Tools now uses the latest Gemini models. The free plan runs on Gemini Flash and Pro unlocks the bigger Gemini Pro models plus remixing.
Put a smarter model together with better instructions and you get apps that look more polished and actually do what you asked. Here are a couple of recent ones from the site:
TinyTip is a tip calculator and bill splitter. Tip presets, a custom tip, a people counter, and the per-person totals right at the bottom.
Twelve is a daily planner built around 12 focus tasks, with a sprint timer and a history tab.
How Do I Make My Own App?
Go to the Calculator Tools create page and just tell the AI about your app. Calculators, trackers, quizzes, mini-games, converters, whatever. Then keep chatting with it to edit and remix until it’s right.
There are a few other ways in too:
- Image to App and Screenshot to App turn a picture into a working app.
- Calculator Tools MCP lets Cursor, Claude or ChatGPT publish a live app straight to your account.
- The Calculator Tools custom GPTs still work if you live in ChatGPT. That’s the follow-up to the ChatGPT plugin and the first Calculator Tools GPT.
Want ideas first? Browse apps made by the community and remix one to make it yours.
Did You Really Not Click the Link Yet?
Seriously, go make an app on Calculator Tools. It’s free, it takes seconds, and the apps are the best they’ve ever been. If you make something cool, send it my way, or tag @CalculatorTools on X!
